Ten ways to keep the sun from getting you down

Posted Aug 22, 2007 6:23 PM CDT

(Newser) – Everyone needs a little vitamin D, but sunburn (or, worse, heatstroke) is no fun. Protect yourself and your family with these tips from MSNBC:

  1. Drink up! Plan on 1 gallon of water per person per day.
  2. Smear on the sunblock and slap on a hat.
  3. Wear breathable fabrics, like cotton or linen, in light colors.

  1. Eat salty foods and bananas.
  2. Schedule outside activities for before or after midday.
  3. Too much sun? Lie down in the shade.
  4. Rent a light-colored vehicle.
  5. Make sure your pet drinks plenty of water.
  6. Check your car's coolant levels.
  7. If you burn, stay out of the sun and try some TLC.
