Hugo Chavez Stoked for 4-Day TV Talkshow

The fun just won't stop on all-singing, all-firing extravaganza

(Newser) – That wacky Hugo Chavez is celebrating the 10th anniversary of his weekly talkshow, Alo Presidente, by taking to the airwaves—for four solid days, the Guardian reports. Starting today, the unscripted show will be in segments "like a soap opera," Chavez promises. Viewers expect the Venezuelan president's usual mix of singing, salty jokes, ramblings about Latin American history, and hiring and firing of government officials. Not everyone's warming up their remote—"Four days of circus," bemoans a major newspaper.

(NEWSER) - Rumors of Hugo Chavez's pending death have been greatly exaggerated—or at least somewhat exaggerated—as new video aired on Cuban television yesterday shows a healthy looking Chavez talking with Fidel Castro, reports the BBC . Reports have swirled that the Venezuelan president is in critical condition in a Cuban hospital, possibly with prostate cancer, although officially he is getting minor surgery for a "pelvic abscess." (NEWSER) - ABC has at long last officially announced that it's signed Katie Couric to host an afternoon talk show , beating out a last-minute push from NBC. In a statement , the network said it had a "multi-year, multi-platform" agreement with the former CBS anchor, that will also include appearances on all of ABC's other news shows. Details of what the New York Times calls "one of television's worst-kept secrets" have not yet been released, but Couric will be co-owner of the program and will share in the profits. More»
