What Happened to Kinder, Gentler Tom Hanks?

In search of the actor's earlier persona

(Newser) – Where has Tom Hanks gone? Sure, he's still around on the big screen, currently breaking the bank with Angels & Demons, but what happened to the Tom Hanks that is "our Jimmy Stewart, a heartland guy, good people," wonders Betsey Sharkey in the Los Angeles Times. The "hero and stand-up guy" of movies like Big and Forrest Gump has given way to the cynicism of Charlie Wilson's War.

Sharkey doesn't begrudge Hanks the paycheck of the Hollywood blockbuster, but she does question who's responsible for the lack of better material. Middle-age is a hard place for a movie star. In the "rules" of Tinseltown, "market metrics are more interested in another Angels & Demons than in Saving Private Ryan." As for Tom Hanks, "I miss him," writes Sharkey. "You know the one I mean."

But second acts are always the hardest, the meat of a movie, a career, a life. I hope for a strong one from Hanks. I miss him. You know the one I mean.
- Betsey Sharkey

But I do long for a different Tom Hanks, the one who feels like he's gone missing in recent years...Silly, heartbreaking, sentimental—all just a part of what I think of as the essential Hanks. - Betsey Sharkey

I get tired of the "good ole days" BS! I mean come on... he is an actor! and more than likely does not what to get typecasted as the "good guy." He seems to do a very good job picking roles that are completely different.

OK...back on topic. I would say Sharkey isn't taking into account that it's no longer the 1950's nor is it the 1980's

R6061...Just how was Newser001 being "racist"? Are you postulating that Catholics are a race now? Perhaps look in your own mirror.
