(Newser) – Pixar’s Up floated to the top of the box office this weekend with $68.2 million, USA Today reports. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian came in second with $25.5 million. Though critics loved it, Drag Me to Hell debuted to just $16.8 million, while Terminator Salvation ($16.1 million) and Star Trek ($12.8 million) rounded out the top five.

'Up' was wonderful! I took my 8 year old to see it in 3D. Although the 3D effects weren't 'in you face', it gave the film depth. But the best part of the film wasn't the 3D, it was the story and performances - The adult appeal is amazing, while my daughter loved it, I believe I enjoyed even more. Its hard to believe Pixar could out do itself, but it has, with 'Up' (understand, Disney is a distributor - has little to nothing to do with production). Interesting insight... The increased box office fees for 3D go directly to the distributor / studio with the rest of the box office ticket price split about 40 / 60 (theater / distributor & studio). 'Ice Age 3 3D' from Twentieth Century Fox; Fox Film Corporation (Rupert Murdoch's News Corp) is due to release in about 3 months. Its normal for studios to supply the 3D glasses, but FOX is now demanding 70% of the box office receipts for this release (an increase of 10%) + the additional $3.25 3D per / ticket / print (goes to distributor / studio) + demanding theaters pay for the glasses. Regal, AMC and Galaxy chains have said, 'Absolutely No.' They recently told FOX, if that's their plan, the theater chains are only interested in 2D prints... We'll have to see where this goes. FOX Corp is seriously hemorrhaging money, while attempting to make up losses through higher fees. Reply

BTW, the theaters rent the film in addition to all the aforementioned, thus lowering overall screening profits for the theater / chain. The only thing that floats theaters and chains are concessions. And you wonder why they charge so much...?!!
