America Jealous of Date Night

Share

(Newser) – Barack and Michelle Obama’s night in New York has “prompted many wives to glare across the breakfast table,” writes Jan Hoffman in the New York Times, “trying to remember the last time their husbands made a fuss over them.” After 16 years together, the Obamas still seem into each other, seeming proof that the modern fantasy of the passionate marriage is still alive.

“How do you compete with that?” Jon Stewart joked on the Daily Show. “Take it down a notch, dude!” “I’d have a lot more pizazz left for my husband, too,” opined one writer, “if we moved into the White House and my mother was on hand to baby-sit 24-7.” But some find Obama’s devotion amidst his busy schedule inspiring. “Musharraf or Michelle?” said Joy Behar of The View, “That’s a tougher thing for him than the average Joe.”

As a society, we want to think a husband might still have his hand on his wife’s knee under the table after 15 years of marriage. - Dr. Whelan, author of Why Smart Men Marry Smart Women.

As a couple, the Obamas seem (at least on the surface) to know how to keep it fresh and exciting. I'm sure they've had their ups/downs, but they're a dynamic couple and I absolutely love the example that they set for our country (ya know, the one with an over half divorce rate). Reply

The Obamas are a good example for Americans to model in many areas of their lives. Good for them. Good for us to have such a family for inspiration. Reply

It's craven to visit the site giving thumbs down to comments without stopping to briefly explain the reason for your disapproval. One must assume from the reluctance that it's grounded in the kind of anti-Obama resentment one runs into so often here that amounts to pure political partisanship at best and disgusting racism at worst. That being said, I can't help wondering how solid the marriage would be if the 2002 senate race had failed as the race for Bobby Rush's congressional seat did. Recent reports are that Michelle was resentful during that period and Barak believed she was not sufficiently supportive. Didn't someone say power is the greatest aphrodisiac? And please, for those who are not familiar with my posts, believe me when I say there are few others on this site who are bigger fans of the POTUS & FLOTUS. The Obama administration is another of the things I never thought I'd see in my lifetime-- including the fall of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall and the peaceful end of the apartheid regime in S.A. Now I'm praying that the Obama team, including the person I was originally supporting for president in 2008, SOS Clinton, will do what Jimmy Carter succeeded in doing-- bring the Israelis and their neighbors closer to lasting peace. I gave you a thumbs up :) I think it's a courtesy to explain negative ratings too. I've been getting them for saying the "sky is blue" these days. I've spent many years at Daily Kos and you betcha' the ratings identified the poster giving it. If you gave a negative, you better have an explanation in the comments.....or your dirt! Kos would ban for abuse. I would like to see that here. Next time someone calls me an idiot conservative douchebag, I'm hitting abuse!

Thanks Denise. I, too, have been wondering about the personal comments to the blandest of factual statements. I think I got a "you're an idiot" on my first comment. Weirdly enough, I found it quite stimulating and have been commenting like crazy ever since. Maybe I just miss my ex.
