NOW Backs Palin Against Dave—With a 'But'

(Newser) – Sarah Palin has a new ally in her feud with David Letterman: the National Organization for Women. "The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days," NOW says on its website, taking particular offense at Letterman's remark about Palin looking like a "slutty" flight attendant. "Someone of Letterman's stature should be above wallowing in the juvenile, sexist mud that other comedians and broadcasters seem to prefer."

The group, however, also recalls the abuse that a young Chelsea Clinton took for her appearance years ago from the likes of Rush Limbaugh. "NOW hopes that all the conservatives who are fired up about sexism in the media lately will join us in calling out sexism when it is directed at women who aren't professed conservatives."

I think it's funny how far you can twist things. (Mind Letterman keeps things very general), she said "his jokes about satchitory rape and my daughter were not except able" (he later explained he was referring to her other daughter, after she claimed he was talking about her 14 yr old daughter) He said "she looked like a slutty flight attendant", her response was, "That's not right to disparaged flight attendants how condemning of them". Which what he said I think could only be translated into "you like slutty and dress like a flight attendant". I am glad he is smart enough to have his writers write generalized jokes, that way you don't have to take people like Sarah Palin so seriously. He has made fun of hundreds of men and woman, with many deserving more concern that hers, I thought talking about. Oj Simpson on the top 10 for several episodes... that had to have been awful for his kids. His statement was in bad taste but hers are also, she could have handled this situation so much better... *sigh*

loptout First of the 14 year old daughter was the one at the game. Either way would it have been any better to talk about her 18 year old daughter? Second if you call some a slut then you call them a slut, what did she do to deserve that? She was in NY doing a charity walk for autism. I understand its humor and late night TV to a liberal audience but to attack an adult is one thing but to go after any of their kids is just wrong, and I think that he should really offer her a real apology. That's just me, I guess you could live with someone calling your mom a slutty flight attendant and then calling you sister a slut as well *sigh*

there's not a joke in saying a-rod boned a 7 years old...probably why it wasnt his joke... but saying a-rod boned a an adult (bristol - and she's all about the abstinence, too!) not really a joke in saying michelle boned a-rod is more of just a rude comment against m.obama, as if she'd lower herself to some half-wit ball player that cant hit a ball hard without drugs.

I find it fascinating that the press and others seem to forget that the most offensive joke was that Palin's daughter was knocked up by A-Rod in the 7th inning. He is a boob for saying that. To claim he did not "know" that Willow - aged 14 - was with her at the baseball game makes him a dumb boob. Of course, if the press did its job and covered Palin as positively as they do Obama, Dave would have been able to see a picture of the family at the game. I am a dreamer. Also, Dave made 95 anti-Palin slurs which he called jokes during the campaign. He continues. Palin was smeared. Even the first posting on Newser conveniently "forgot" to include the daughter "joke." Those who rely on the main stream media - plus those like Letterman and SNL - do have a negative opinion of Palin based on ignorance of what she has done. They get caught up with Tina Fey and her jokes about seeing Russia from her window. Anyone who learned geography knows that it is indeed possible to see Russia from Alaska's shore. It is believed that once the two shores were connected. Ignorance is not knowing knowledge and can be cured by a little effort spent learning. George Soros bragged that he spent millions of his own money to discredit Bush because Bush believed in America's place in the world. Soros wants a One World Order with America just another country and the IMF in charge of a one world order government currency - he wants to dump the dollar. Perhaps Dave has become one of Soros's lackeys and is being encouraged to discredit Palin. Who knows? I only know that Dave should LAUGH at a joke that his so Harry has learned why we have the phrase to never trust a Greek. Dave should really chuckle at that because it is the same as the one he told about a 14 year old girl. I can't imagine the hurt and embarrassment that this 14 year old is feeling. Perhaps Obama could have his daughter call her to give her encouragement. I think they are about the same age. I wait for Dave to tell a similar joke about the Obama girls. Don Imus lost his job for making a racial slur as an aside while talking on his show. Dave and his crew of writers created this joke and deemed it acceptable. They all deserve to be suspended. Dave's "apology" just made his smear just as sleazy as before. If there are any readers of this line with 14 year old daughters, sisters, or granddaughters, then you should all be very angry with Letterman for his lack of honor. I didn't hear him joke about his wife that he "knocked up" a few years before he finally married her. Reply

Linda, I admire your long, well-stated comment of your opinion, instead of the pithy remark that shuts the door on discussion. This alternate medium which gives us both a voice is a true chance for the healthy exchange of ideas that is the bedrock of our Republic. First, I want to question your use of the term 'main stream media.' Before the revocation of the Fairness Doctrine in the late eighties all media was simply mass media. It was dull and lacked any bias lean to the left or the right because that required equal and free time to the opposing opinion. The for-profit media had no desire for free so the news was simply middle stream and colorless and interpretation was in the eye and ear of the beholder. Dropping the Fairness Doctrine allowed anyone to make controversial remarks without their being on someone else's dime. The first person to use this new media 'non--fairness' was Rush Limbaugh and to create the sensationalism that a new outlet needs he and others simply created the idea that there was a liberal bias that he was addressing. If he had been a liberal he would have pushed that there was a conservative bias. The point is that before the idea of bias was introduced to fuel the idea that there was a dramatic need for an alternative viewpoint, there was no viewpoint at all. Since the late 80's, we have had a media crowded with bias, and that is fine. But the notion that there was or is a liberal leaning to the news is an invented marketing ploy. There was nothing and then there was everything. Secondly, because that marketing idea worked so well, we find ourselves assuming false ideological positions based on a false premise. This leads to a divisiveness that while profitable for all the media outlets deprives us of the quiet moments before the mass media went bias in both directions where we could mull the news and form our own opinions. Lastly, I understand your desire to see equal as same treatment. But that has been the case for years. The children of TR, Ford, Carter, etc. make plain that as soon as the Obama children do something worth joking about, Jon Stewart will be all over it. And I find it ironic that in your desire to equate equal and same you don't notice that the idea that America is somehow a county 'different' than other countries contains a level of rampant ethnocentricity that is the very thing you loathe at the individual level. Thanks for the chance for the discussion.

Palin doesn't need to get into the mud with him. Imus was fired for far less. He called the coach and then met with the players to extend his apology. He was classy. Letterman is treating this like the silly joke it is. Why aren't people sticking up for a 14 year old girl who has become the butt of a pervert's joke?
