'Stalking' Victim Is Barry's Ex

(Newser) – Marion Barry’s lawyer says the woman he was arrested for stalking on Saturday is his ex-girlfriend, and that the two had been together earlier that day, the Washington Post reports. Police say they took Barry into custody after a woman said he was “bothering her”; ex Donna Watts-Brighthaupt says she didn't try to have Barry arrested and that he was pulled over for a traffic violation, though she does have “tons and tons of evidence” that he was stalking her.

“How are there charges of stalking when they had lunch earlier in the day? It was consensual,” a Barry spokeswoman said. “There was no hide-and-seek stalking as one would think when they hear the term.”

Because it is my belief that this charge will not stand up, that there will be no prosecution and certainly no conviction, I believe it will have zero effect on Mr. Barry's probation. - Frederick D. Cooke Jr., Barry lawyer
