Detainees, Once Acquitted, May Still Die at Gitmo

Like Bush, Obama administration argues for indefinite detention

Share

(Newser) – Detainees held at Guantanamo Bay and other military prisons may not be freed even if a US commission acquits them of all charges, an Obama administration official testified yesterday. The Defense Department rep told a Senate committee that detainees would be assessed on an individual basis and that prisoners might receive "some form of periodic review," reports the Wall Street Journal.

As with the Bush administration, Obama's team insists that laws of war allow the US to detain foreigners in perpetuity and to try them in military commissions rather than civilian courts. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a leading Republican, said he agreed that even if detainees were found not guilty of all charges, "some of them may in fact die in jail." But one Democrat warned that military commissions "aren't a fair trial, that's a show trial."

As an Obama supporter/voter, I am appalled that he would continue ANY of Bush's un-American policies such as this, wiretapping, hiding visitor logs, blocking the release of photos, defending Cheney, or any of the other shit... Seriously, Obama? This is how this is going to play out??

Oh what a lovely piece of crap this unjust war has wrought, this again falls in GW's lap because there is no place on earth to place these people who WERE found NOT GUILTY but now hate this country so badly they pose future danger to the country if released. Read Infidel if you can and learn the facts. Reply

Then he should let them go. Isn't that what he promised on the campaign trail?

....they were found not guilty? I thought the problem was that they were being held without trial?
