No House Resolution Praising Jacko: Pelosi

Share

(Newser) – The House of Representatives will not consider a resolution praising Michael Jackson’s humanitarianism, the Boston Globe reports. “A resolution, I think, would open up to contrary views to—that are not necessary at this time to be expressed in association with a resolution whose purpose is quite different,” Nancy Pelosi explained. Sponsor Sheila Jackson-Lee, who spoke warmly of MJ at his memorial, says she isn’t giving up.

There's an opportunity on the floor of the House to express their sympathy or their praise any time that they wish. I don't think it's necessary for us to have a resolution. - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Congress has better things to do than debating something like this, and at least here at newser the consensus seems to be: "Give it a rest." I concur.

Jackson's life seemed devoted to superficiality & consumerism - two traits incompatible with a lifetime of humanitarianism. He was indeed "the king of pop", for those who admire such things. It's degrading- for him & for us- to post-posthumously transform him into something he was not.

Bah. His humanitarian contributions, had he been from England, would have got him Knighted a long time ago, if not assuredly posthumously. It would not have killed Congress to recognize him for his contributions. Hell, they pass enough resolutions condemning foreign governments for actions that have absolutely nothing to do with us.IE: Russia during Georgian conflict, and Gaza are the most recent examples I can remember. Both during time when Congress had better things to do than pas resolution against sovereign nations. bah....fuck this hypocritical bunch of loons who call themselves the US Congress. Agreed. Republicans (actually, so far only one Republican) work themselves into a racist lather and Democrats back down. The former have no soul and the latter have no spine. (Yes, I know it's not quite that cut-and-dried; some Democrats are also racists.)
