India Cowers Ahead of Total Solar Eclipse

Share

(Newser) – Wednesday’s total solar eclipse is eliciting fear and speculation across the Indian subcontinent, AFP reports. A New Delhi gynecologist says caesarian sections scheduled for the day of the eclipse have been canceled. “This is a belief deeply rooted in Indian society,” he said. “Couples are willing to do anything to ensure that the baby is not born on that day.”

Astrologers are also getting hysterical. One Mumbai practitioner sees an attack by Kashmiri separatists, a natural disaster, the possible assassination of an Indian leader, and a US strike against Iran. Another sees the bright side: “During the period of the eclipse, the opposite attracting forces are very, very powerful. From a spiritual point of view, this is a wonderful time to do any type of worship.”

This article is exaggerating. The only people freaking out are Indian astrologers and the people who listen to them. Reply

There is ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE between this kind of nonsense and any other supernatural belief like Christianity, Islam, Scientology, that creepy cult down the street, etc. it's all the same deeply-held belief based on nothing, but somehow when it's something like this people seem to see how crazy it all is... Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and several other religions basically teach the Golden Rule, treat others the way you want them to treat you and to put the interests of others above self-interests. That's probably worth something. There are certainly lots of trappings and extra baggage when it comes to organized religion, but at their core, I do see a difference between religions with such tenements and religions/cults that put the interests of a particular individual above things like service or community.
