India Cowers Ahead of Total Solar Eclipse

(Newser) – Wednesday’s total solar eclipse is eliciting fear and speculation across the Indian subcontinent, AFP reports. A New Delhi gynecologist says caesarian sections scheduled for the day of the eclipse have been canceled. “This is a belief deeply rooted in Indian society,” he said. “Couples are willing to do anything to ensure that the baby is not born on that day.”

Astrologers are also getting hysterical. One Mumbai practitioner sees an attack by Kashmiri separatists, a natural disaster, the possible assassination of an Indian leader, and a US strike against Iran. Another sees the bright side: “During the period of the eclipse, the opposite attracting forces are very, very powerful. From a spiritual point of view, this is a wonderful time to do any type of worship.”

I experienced an eclipse once. Half interested but at the insistence of my neighbors, I stepped outside to watch the dark come and as it came at us, there was such a feeling of the earth's power that engulfed all who watched. Someone who did not watch came out of their house still in their PJs looking frightened asking what happened. It turned out he had forgotten about the eclipse and his reaction seemed to show that there might be something happening during one of those that could be related to the gravity of the planet. The reaction was not like you'd expect, with people saying, "Awesome! and Wow! Cool!." but gasps, subdued groans and half finished sentences like, "I didn't expect.." and, "I feel so..." Everyone was so distracted with their own thoughts they just went home after not saying much at all. Though we talked about it now and then it was mostly to ask if the other also experienced it the same way and, "...did how it felt surprise you, too?" we were all still a little subdued even days after. I couldn't get over how immensely powerful the experience was. I can't fully explain it but I can understand how some would find it disturbing enough to become a little frightened and turn to their flavor of religion trying to understand the experience. I know I never want to experience another one. It shakes your world view for a long time.
