Boogie Wedding Vid: a YouTube Cash Cow?

(Newser) – The “Jill and Kevin” wedding video that's drawing millions of hits on YouTube includes uninvited guests: ads. Alongside the charming video of groomsmen and bridesmaids getting jiggy, YouTube yesterday ran an advertisement for a wedding product; today, "the ad space encouraged me to go to the California State Fair,” Chris Matyszczyk writes on CNET. Just how much is Google making from these ads?

“Google has been on an interestingly defensive offensive on the subject of YouTube's prospects for money-making,” Matyszczyk writes. "Indeed, it has made much of a new ability to 'buzz target' those videos that are gaining exponential viral momentum. It would be a gracious gift for Google to give us a running score of just how much it's making from Jill and Kevin's wedding.”

Friday night, I saw [an ad] for Veet, a superbly relevant wedding product. (Gentlemen, in case you are unfamiliar with Veet, it's an excellent repository of depilatory stuff.) - Chris Matyszczyk

It's clear how they plan to make money: by turning you tube into hulu tube. They've been working to keep user created content off the front page and promote partner content. User created content is generally not profitable except in exceptional cases. Or at least not as profitable as they would like.
