Top iPhone Annoyances and How to Fix Them

(Newser) – Even a gadget as good as the iPhone isn't without its annoyances, although luckily bigger geeks than you have cooked up workarounds for most of them, Jared Newman writes in PC World. Some major gripes:

  • AT&T: The carrier's stranglehold in the US is becoming even more irksome as foreign iPhone users start to enjoy better tethering and multimedia messaging services.
  • Weak email management: An update has added bulk email management, but there's still no simple way to delete or move batches of messages.

  • Default apps can't be hidden: Apple seems to think every user needs a shortcut to checking the stock market. Wrong.
  • Apps can't run in the background: It's great to be able to listen to Internet radio stations like Pandora, but it'd be even better if you could check email at the same time.

Praise it all you want, but the 'Jesus phone' has plenty of little annoyances or nuisances that get under a user's skin. - Jared Newman

The fact that software developers are letting a hardware manufacturer dictate the terms of the software they write is more interesting to me. It's unheard of anywhere, except perhaps in the earlier days of Nintendo. As long as theres money to be made, people will put up with anything, I guess.

i can listen to music while texting someone, seeing as the ipod is concidered a background app while in use. just can't use something like pandora while texting, and that's fine, since pandora is a bandwidth and battery hog anyways.

I personally love being able to listen to music and text someone, while my browser loads a page on my BlackBerry Bold. Not having apps that ran in the background would annoy me to no end on my old phone: stopping the music player to check and AIM, or play chess, etc.
