Manny, Ortiz Both on '03 Doping List

Share

(Newser) – Insiders say both Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz are on “the list” of baseball players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003, the New York Times reports. Ramirez recently finished a 50-game suspension for taking a banned drug; it’s the first time Ortiz—Ramirez’s teammate on two World Series-winning Boston Red Sox squads—has been linked to such substances.

Now that they are separated—outfielder Ramirez is with the Los Angeles Dodgers—their fortunes appear to be deteriorating. “I’m not talking about that anymore,” Ortiz, a designated hitter, said today of the 2003 tests, which were supposed to be kept confidential by the players union but mysteriously surfaced. Insiders say which substances the players tested positive for is unclear.

this figures, David Ortiz is a monster (im guessing he used to be somewhere in the vacinity of 275-300), and his home run total, actually his entire game has suffered a huge dropoff this year... Manny's positive comes as no suprise either... Reply

"When Sports Illustrated reported in February that Alex Rodriguez had tested positive for steroids in 2003, Ortiz said any player who tested positive should be suspended for an entire season."..........."I think you clean up the game by the testing. I know that if I test positive by using any kind of substance, I know that I'm going to disrespect my family, the game, the fans and everybody, and I don't want to be facing that situation. "So what would I do? I won't use it, and I'm pretty sure that everybody is on the same page," he said. Reply

Yes! Now Boston is just as shamed as the Yankees, and all the other steroid-using world series winners... This steroid thing is destroying baseball. Reply

The numbers don't lie....the long ball and ultimately, steroids has saved baseball. Way back when attendance was twindling...a little "arms race" between Sosa/McGwire spiked fan interest. And ever since baseball has been thriving. If players want to put their bodies on the line then that is on them. Reply
