(Newser) – President Obama’s birthday is right around the corner—no matter where Lou Dobbs thinks he was born—but what do you get the leader of the free world? Politico asked various Washingtonians their thoughts for Tuesday's big occasion. Some notable responses:

  • Joe Biden: “It’s a surprise!”
  • Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah): “The ShamWow, so he can help clean up this financial mess. He may need a couple, but as I recall, you get two for one.”

  • Sen. Al Franken, former funny person: “The health care reform bill.”
  • Austan Goolsbee, member, Council of Economic Advisers:  “Federal gift rules prohibit giving more than $20 in value, so a bag of Garrett’s popcorn from Chicago and maybe a major bank.”
  • Newt Gingrich: “Three days’ basketball practice with Michael Jordan.”
  • Ron Kirk, US trade representative: “The $20 I lost to him on the golf course.”

@qA from the CBO appointed by the democrats by the way say that the current plans are not good, and will add to the debt. The repub's don't have to lie all they have to do is quote the CBO. It's your own party that is screwing this up, all the republicans have to do is sit back and wait, so you don't want the people to vote but you don't want the president to decide so what do you want to happen?

@GODAWGS: I wasn't talking about prop 8 - I was talking about experts who said that CA citizens voted against taxes that would have paid for the programs that Arnold had to cut because they now have no money. They wanted the goods but didn't want to pay for it. If the people are allowed to vote on health care then they will probably get to vote on how to pay for it and people are under the impression that their taxes will go up, which it will but only for the top 1.2%. So that's why I doubt it would pass - people want the service but refuse to pay for it. What you hear from the Republicans (all lies) would triple and the media would sit back and present them as truth just like they are doing now. I did not say leave it up to the president, this is not a dictatorship.
