'Cash For Clunkers' Safe: White House

Share

(Newser) – The rumors of the “cash for clunkers” deal’s demise have been greatly exaggerated, the White House said today, promising that the trade-in program will continue even after consumers have used up its allotted $1 billion. “If you were planning on going to buy a car this weekend using this program, the program continues to run,” said spokesman Robert Gibbs.

Auto dealers said yesterday that they’d been told to stop offering customers rebates for their cars because the plan was swiftly running out of money. But Gibbs says the administration is confident it can hammer out an extension with Congress. Carl Levin, however, warned it's a limited-time offer. “We don’t know how long it’ll last,” said the Michigan Democrat. “People should go to their car dealers now.”

because it was almost out of the 1 billion that they allocated for it. now they have allocated more money. it's the one thing that has worked so far.

I've spoken to several dealers today and the program is working so well, the fear is now, of running out of cars. Some dealers will not have cars to sell you even if you need one. My suggestion is to get out there now,if you need a car from this program. Stay home if you are not participating in the program. This is not the time to be casually looking for a car. Stores have a shortage of help for all the traffic they are getting. Reply

I hope someone reminds the buyers that they're taking on debt, a car loan, that they're supposed to be paying on. So let's hope all those people have thought of that before signing up for a new car. Reply
