2 Words Could Clean Up 'Death Panel' Mess: Parker

'A simple amendment' would put debate to rest

(Newser) – Sarah Palin went way too far in suggesting “death panels” would kill her loved ones—but  the wording of the House health bill authorizing payment for end-of-life consultations is worrisome, writes Kathleen Parker in the Washington Post. “A simple amendment would do much to cool tempers.” The current wording lets us “imagine a scenario when, feeble and ill, we might be subtly urged to forgo further life-sustaining treatment out of consideration for others,” Parker writes.

To fix that, “all that's needed is specific language saying that these end-of-life consultations are not mandatory—either for physicians or patients—and that there would be no penalty, either in coverage or compensation, for declining to participate.”

It would be nice to think that everything goes as patients intend, but we can safely assume that when human error collides with bureaucratic efficiency, nightmarish enforcement scenarios could ensue. - Kathleen Parker

Actually a Dem. today just suggested an amendment making them optional. That she made the suggestion means that they weren't optional as written. Unless, the Dem Rep lied, She also suggested language that removed money incentive for doctors who held the consultations. I'm surprised that you didn't read about this since it was on many of the sites I've visited. You must rely on main stream networks to get your "news," That is not a good habit if you want some facts. You need to check out both liberal and conservative sites if you want some truth. Otherwise, it's just a choice of orange or grape Kool Aid.

I don't think you can forbid Obama from running his own news system from the WH. I suggest newsbusters.com. It's loaded with video clips showing how different networks cover different issues. Talk about sleazy press. I swear you'd be amazed it you visited the site every night for a week. It would cure you of being a Dem. but not convince you to become a Rep. At least you could ask intelligent questions and make intelligent comments. Knowledge is power.

But then Obama wouldn't sign it into law. You need to read Rahm Emanuel's Dr. brother article in the Lancet - rationing = adolescents, teens, babies, middle aged, elderly and babies with birth defects. Then you can start worrying for your parents or yourself if you are over 65. Of course some of you wown't believe it because it is too horrendous to imagine. You need to wake up. Read the Lancet article. Then pray that the Republican bill introduced in May wipes out the Dem. bill introduced in June. Of, course, you probably haven't heard about Patient's Choice because it tries to solve the problems not create a new mega system. It addresses - gasp - tort reform!
