Browns' Stallworth Suspended for '09 Season

Broke league's 'substance-abuse,' 'personal conduct' rules

Share

(Newser) – Donte’ Stallworth has been suspended without pay for the 2009 NFL season, the Plain Dealer reports. The Browns wide receiver, who pleaded guilty in June to DUI manslaughter committed in Miami in March, violated league policies on personal conduct and substance abuse. Stallworth is banned from taking part in any team activity in the coming season.

“Longstanding league policies make clear that discipline is warranted 'if a player is convicted of or admits to a violation of the law...relating to the use of alcohol,'" commissioner Roger Goodell wrote to Stallworth. The receiver reacted to the news on Twitter, quoting a 17th-century poet: “I'M A LITTLE WOUNDED, BUT I'M NOT SLAIN; I WILL LAY ME DOWN 4A WHILE 2 BLEED, THEN I'LL RISE & FIGHT WITH YOU AGAIN.”

This is BS. Give this guy the same penalty Joe Blow would receive. I hate the fact that money influences everything, even justice, in this great homeland of mine. Reply

"Sports?"..whatever happened to sports? the headlines continually feature athletes (who are paid millions of dollars to "perform"t also aking drugs, being arrested for carryng guns, fighting, raping women, crashing cars, drunken driving, et al. Basically it's because as gifted athletes they grow up in an environment where their physical abilities are emphasized over educational, social, or moral influences. Universities want to be known for their champion teams thus athletes are often allowed leeway in scholastic and moral areas. The result? Conducting dog fights in their back yard, drug use, rape, et al. In the pursuit of fame and fortune these uneducated athletes are ground up and spit out in the quest for big bucks. Reply

This is total Bullshit, he should be out for the next 20-30 years. If you or I driving drunk and killed an innocent man we would be locked up right now! And the family of the guy Stallworth ran down with his 2 ton Bentley, well what are you going to say?! Stallworth probably settled for $20-30 million dollars, are you going to take the money or have this guy spend his life in jail if you were his family? First time I heard his family took the money I was so pissed off at them, as if I was the victim, but want are you going to do? ! Hard call but I agree it's a bullshit country when you can get out of jail when you kill someone just because you have money and can pay someone off. Reply
