Surgeon General Nominee Consults for Burger King

Benjamin served on fast-food company's nutritional advisory panel

Share

(Newser) – Burger King has paid Regina Benjamin, President Obama’s pick for surgeon general, $10,000 this year for serving on an advisory panel to the fast-food giant, the Washington Times reports. Administration reps say the Alabama physician used her position on Burger King’s nutritional advisory board to advocate for low-sodium foods and clear presentation of nutrition information, and plans to resign if and when the Senate confirms her as surgeon general.

Burger King says the panel was formed as part of "ongoing efforts to promote balanced diets and active lifestyle choices." But for some critics, a financial relationship between the would-be surgeon and the home of the Whopper is unacceptable. "Fast-food companies are not public health agencies; their job is to sell fast food—and the more, the better," said Marion Nestle, an NYU nutritionist.

I am aware of the counterargument that if you want companies to become more health conscious, you need to work from the inside. But in my experience, that argument does not hold.

Non-story? It's a disgrace. Maybe not as horrific as OPhRMA stuffing the government food and safety positions with genetically altered frankenfood lobbyists, but pretty darned disgusting nonetheless.

"...a financial relationship between the would-be surgeon and the home of the Whopper is unacceptable." Damn right it's unacceptable. Big Business is already WAY too influential in DC. No need to add to it. Nice that she has offered to resign, but will anyone believe that the relationship will end? Obama, find someone else... Reply

What an idiotic place for anyone to draw the line. How would you feel if BK had made a donation to rebuild her clinic? She wasn't a lobbyist for Pete's sake. I have some ideas about where your name should go.

lol, kokua. Some people should read these articles a bit slower. Plus Marion Nestle should know that this relationship would not result in BK becoming an agency. Hell, maybe she doesn't and should go back to making menus.
