Boozing Author/Mom Hits the Wagon

Share

(Newser) – Stefanie Wilder-Taylor made a name for herself penning light-hearted accounts of life as a hard-drinking mom, so her blog readers were shocked when she announced that she was laying off the sauce, the New York Times reports. Drinking-while-parenting “was a way to express that we’re still fun people,” but when she woke up on the couch fully clothed one morning, she realized, “I have these kids who are depending on me, and I have a bad problem.”

With book titles like Naptime Is the New Happy Hour, Wilder-Taylor was the highest-profile spokeswoman of a burgeoning pop-culture movement that wryly points to the bottle as a cure for motherhood’s stresses. Her blog fostered a community of parenting under the influence, but most of her readers have been supportive of her decision. “It’s embarrassing to be all ‘Rah Rah Rah! Gooooo BOOZE!’ only to zip off with my tail between my legs,” Wilder-Taylor writes, “but it’s what I had to do.”

Sad part is how many of the feeble minded have heeded her original advice and drank their way into an accident causing harm to children or drinking themselves into alcoholism. You would think anyone with half a brain cell with as much information available today about the dangers of alcohol would be a bit more cautious. Sorry, I come from a family with a history of alcohol abuse and have no patients for drunks, they cause much damage to the innocent in their bumbling stupor but I do hope this lady finds her way to get clean and reverse some damage she has caused. It’s embarrassing to be all ‘Rah Rah Rah! Gooooo BOOZE!’ only to zip off with my tail between my legs saying, ‘never mind, I’ve joined the other team,’ That says it all, she's embarrassed by sobriety, but had no qualms choosing booze over her children. Whatta bimbo. Reply

Agreed. My ex-wife grew up in "an alcohol home", as she called it. I was surprised at the effect I came to see that it had on her, I can only imagine how awful it was to grow up under those circumstances. I hope this woman has success in "getting on the wagon", as it seems most do not. Hopefully, she will continue blogging, and perhaps be able to have some influence in fighting these behaviors. Reply
