Woman of the Year: Beyonce

Share

(Newser) – How fierce: Beyoncé has been named Billboard's Woman of the Year. The magazine singled her out as the most inspirational female recording artist of the last 12 months. The honor comes on the heels of a world tour to promote I Am...Sasha Fierce that saw the singer's philanthropic alter ego emerge as well: Beyoncé donated 2,500 tickets to families battered by Detroit's auto crisis and helped Feeding America deliver 3.5 million meals to food banks.

"She has not only influenced pop culture with her hit songs and signature dance moves, but has inspired women everywhere with her unique style, business savvy, and dedication to charitable causes," says Billboard's editorial director.

A talent no better than the average competent hoofer, but the consummate product of a stage family and 'handlers', the best money could buy, and of course a model's looks. Leave it to a superficial and pompous marketing entertainment rag like Billboard to offer a puffed-up a prize to one born with such a significant spoon in her mouth. What's the inspiration here, why is this not a good singer, or a 'she sold a lot of records' or 'she's a kind person that gives (some) back', but WOMAN OF THE YEAR? Who among us, if drowning in flowing money from having been made into product like Beyonce, wouldn't naturally earmark some of it for philanthropy (at the very least) to alleviate the guilt? I'm sure she's really very nice, I have no complaint against her, but really, Billboard, woman of the year? Who are you to to choose WOMAN of the year? Your prize should be called 'commercially viable model, singer and nice person of the year' Reply
