Gun-Toter's Pastor Prayed for Obama's Death

Ariz. preacher called prez 'socialist devil'

(Newser) – The man who brought an assault rifle to an Obama town hall in Arizona last week had attended a sermon the day before during which the pastor said he would “pray for Barack Obama to die and go to hell,” TPM reports. “I’d like Barack Obama to melt like a snail tonight,” said the pastor, Steven Anderson, calling Obama “the socialist devil, murderer, infanticide.”

The congregant, Chris Broughton, told Anderson he planned to take the rifle to the rally, but Anderson says he encouraged him to obey the law. “Nowhere in the sermon did I advocate vigilantism,” says Anderson. “I’d rather have him die of natural causes anyway, that way he’s not some martyr. I’m praying for him to die just so he gets what he deserves.”

The jarring disconnect between "Reverend" Anderson's presumed beliefs and his espoused beliefs staggers all that is rational and all that is sincerely holy. Anderson may be a pastor of some eccentric distortion but he is no pastor of Christ.

ru, what is sad is he probably has a large congregation. I do believe in certain principles of the free market: if people weren't into what he says, his church should be empty and thus out of business. The problem is there are TOO MANY wanting, craving a message like that. And what keeps butts in seats (read wallets and purses in the collection plate) is what is important. @Snarfeh, most monotheistic religions make it a point to say: This is the only way, and everything has to be attributable to the one God, unless it's bad then it's the Devil.

i'm an atheist but i have to confess that the only ones i met who really looked like real christian people and earned my respect were jehowa's witnesses with their absolute refusal of violence and preaching around like jesus. when doing so they also take more s**t than elder Young in 'orgazmo' movie yet don't get angry or tell you to die or go to hell. don't know about the mormons, maybe they're christians too. the catholic look more like a semipagan cult, they recall me the santeria or vodoo. if i had to stick with some form of christianism (i man under gun menace) i'd choose some form of protestantism, but please tell me first what confession allows his preachers to talk to God and ask for the death of someone else, no regard if he/she is a hobo or the president. this looks more like satanism.

@sully - sorry for not responding sooner, I went on vacation and when on vacation, I do not read the news unless something major happens. As to your question, last I heard, the Jews consider themselves God's chosen. If something changed, I'm not aware of that. As for the Obama part, that wasn't supposed to be in the quotes but it was supposed to be part of the sentence. Israel is not happy with the Obama Administration, therefore, I don't think Israel would be all that unhappy if he were to die.

Keybored you are absolutely correct that he is a radical. His church is the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe Az. It is an independent automomous church...they are not accoutable to anyone..i.e. church conferences or denominations Very fundamental in their views and rely on their interpertation of the Bible. Anderson has no formal college education though he has committed to memory over 100 chapters of the Bible, including 1/2 of the New Testament. Anyone can be called Pastor...the meaning is shepherd. One can only be called Rev. if they have been ordained, which in most cases means going through a formal process. These types always give religion a bad name.

REV doesn't mean ordained--which for most churches mean a seminary degree + recommendation by a overseeing board. I know because I'm both seminary educated and ordained--but there are REV and Brothers and Pastors all over--and even those who call themselves DR.--who have just decided to use that title.
