(Newser) – More than 125 firefighters rushed to a major Los Angeles boulevard deluged by a broken water main in the wee hours, the LA Times and AP report. A 64-inch pipe, part of the city's original 94-year-old water system, erupted this morning, sweeping cars down streets and damaging businesses and homes. No injuries were reported, but flooding was several feet deep in places. Officials expect the boulevard to be closed for 2 or 3 days.

its the same the world over, these things happen because of chronic underinvestment in infrastructure, these pipes haven't been replaced since WW1 - of course its a political problem - its the same with the roads, no investment in public transport = gridlock

How bizarre we've become. When the pipe burst in Chicago 15 years ago and flooded all the bottom floors of downtown--politics weren't even mentioned. Back then we were all just Americans who chose a party on Election Day and when stuff happened it was about fixing it. We never blamed anyone because it was everyones problem and no one's particular fault. We were all just Americans who understood that thing about dividing weakening the whole. Now we just sound like a couple of people in divorce court. We used to like each other but the 300 dollar an hour lawyers want us to fight over the everyday dishes.
