Garrison Keillor Hospitalized After Stroke

But expects to be back on 'Prairie' in two weeks, as planned

(Newser) – Garrison Keillor is in the hospital following a minor stroke, but he is in good condition and expects to start the new season of “A Prairie Home Companion” on time, the AP reports. “He is up and moving around, speaking sensibly, working on a laptop,” says a hospital spokesman. Keillor will remain at the hospital until tomorrow for further testing.

"I am in the hands of smart and compassionate people and plan to get out on Friday and get right back to work," Keillor said. "And that's the news from here."

(NEWSER) - The Republican who replaced Barack Obama in the US Senate underwent surgery today, after suffering a stroke this weekend, his office has revealed. Mark Kirk, 52, is currently recovering in Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, the Chicago Tribune reports. "Due to his young age, good health, and the nature of the stroke, doctors are very confident in the Senator's recovery," his office said in a sparse statement. More»

Amnesty International says security forces running free in state-run facilities

(NEWSER) - Wounded Syrian protesters would be well-advised to avoid state-run hospitals—because security forces and medical staff are torturing people within them, Amnesty International alleges in a new report. “Syrian authorities seem to have given the security forces a free rein in hospitals,” one Amnesty researcher said, according to the Guardian . “In many cases hospital staff appear to have taken part in the torture and ill treatment of the very people they are supposed to care for.” More»

(NEWSER) - A compelling story out of the US South Pole station: Manager Renee-Nicole Douceur says she has suffered a stroke and needs to be evacuated for proper treatment, but the National Science Foundation says it won't be safe enough to send in a plane for at least a few more weeks. The 58-year-old Douceur and her family are now making a public push to pressure the NSF and the company that manages the base, Raytheon Polar Services, to move. The push includes a website and a Facebook page , and Douceur has given interviews to Discovery and the New York Times among other media outlets. More»

Study placed children in poisonous homes, lawsuit says

(NEWSER) - Poor black children in Baltimore were exposed to "dangerous levels" of lead during a 1990s housing experiment, a new lawsuit claims. Families in the class action suit say the Kennedy Krieger Institute knowingly placed children in houses with high levels of lead-paint poisoning, the Baltimore Sun reports. But the hospital says the children were put in homes with lower contamination than where they lived before. "The lawyers have wrongly placed blame on our Institute," says an institute rep. More»
