Joe Wilson not wrong about Obama wanting to insure illegals

(Newser) – Give Joe Wilson a break. It’s hard to fit the complexities of policy into an outburst during a presidential address, but the South Carolina congressman has a point: If you connect two of President Obama’s top policy priorities, he does want to give insurance to illegal immigrants. It’s just that he’ll make them legal immigrants first, writes Terence P. Jeffrey, editor-in-chief of the right-wing CNS.

"It is true that both the House and Senate health care bills as they are now drafted would make illegal aliens ineligible for federally funded health care," Jeffrey acknowledges. But Obama said as recently as Aug. 10 that he plans to enact immigration reform that would create a “pathway to citizenship” for illegal aliens. The insurance exchanges described last night would be fully operational in 4 years—meaning that, if Obama gets his way on immigration reform, current illegal aliens will be well on that “pathway” by then.

Thank you, Pastanza. I'm having the same problem understanding this logic and the pressing need to stick up for someone who was self-admittedly wrong. The President did not lie about this issue. Even though they know the facts now, we still have people saying that the bill can't be enforced. Look, if it passes, it becomes law - if someone breaks the law - and the last time I checked, insurance fraud was a crime - they will be subject to fines and imprisonment - and if they're here illegally, to deportation. Why can't people be at least as big as Rep Wilson, admit that what he said and the way he said it was wrong?

No, there's no lie and Wilson is full of it, and he's also an object of scorn for his outburst during a formal address to Congress. Opponents are welcome to dislike the president and disagree with his policies, but showing respect for the office of the Presidency is the least that should be expected from US Representatives. Wilson, by disrespecting the office, has dishonored his own House. Jay, the President didn't lie about free care for illegals - but rather than go into the details of policy decisions concerning those in this country illegally, the President chose to stay on topic and put health care insurance reform in perspective. When that reform is passed, there will be other initiatives which will open a pathway for illegal aliens to become citizens. As citizens, they will be required to have health insurance coverage. I know this is intricate and requires effort to understand, but you're wasting your breath with objections that have been met in policies you haven't read.

Vendetta, Then you weren't paying attention. The agreement was signed by Bush with the Iraqi's before he left office, so that Obama could not completely remove the troops. However, in the last 2 1/2 months the troop withdrawls in Iraq have begun, so the troops being sent to Iraq are troops to give a break to the ones that have been there longer and need to get them out. The drawdown was suppose to take 18 mos. and it has begun. He always said, during his campaign, that he would take the fight to Afghanastan to go after the Taliban...THE TERRORISTS THAT ACTUALLY ATTACKED THE US. So, if you weren't paying attention, you threw yourself under that bus. Military missions are not as simply as people think, it takes planning down to how many MRE's they're gonna need to feed the troops and it takes months to prepare the equipment to ship back to the US. It doesn't just land on the spot it's needed. It has to be shipped by boat, some by planes, transported by rail,etc. Lagistics are nightmare and it can't be done alone, hence our troops are doing all that they can to get home and Obama IS working to make it happen.

Healthcare is a mess in this country. It is too expensive and too technological. It is routine for surgeries to be in the 10's to 100's of thousands of dollars. Obese pigs take a huge share of resources and the cosmetic surgeons are shooting botox into people's faces. What a fucking nightmare. Reply

true, but elective procedures such as botox aren't covered by insurance. that $600-$800 per vial is paid out of pocket. therefore, it's pure profit for whatever salon - sorry, "med spa" - does it for you. not sure, but does insurance cover gastric bypass? prolly does, just seems like it only should for life-threatening obesity.

In July he told the Catholics "rumors of my rescinding the conscience rule have been greatly exaggerated." And now? He changes the name to "National Conscience Rule" and swears it will remain in place. Forked-tongue devil. I'm only surprised Hillary didn't blurt out "LIAR!" during the primary debates when he lied through his smoke-stained lips about only seeing Rezko a few hours and hardly knowing him! Reply

I fail to see what changing the name of whatever this rule is has any relevance ... or any basis in fact. Since when was it ever officially called the "Bush's Conscience Rule." Or when did it get the official name of the "National Conscience Rule"? And even if any of that were true, which it obviously isn't...what in the hell does that have to do with whether or not he's lying, or not rescinding something he told Catholics he wouldn't be rescinding, or... okay, you're an idiot. Wilson is a politician and will get no defense from me on what he said last night. But, I do find it interesting that MSNBC has been REPEATEDLY reporting today that Wilson said "you're a liar" to the President. If that were the case, it would be a personal attack by Wilson on Obama's character and completely uncalled for in last night's setting. Any American should be indignant over a personal attack in that type of setting. But apparently Wilson said "you lie" which would not be an attack on Obama's character but a criticism (at an inappropriate time and in an inappropriate manner) of what Obama was saying. Interesting how Obama defenders (yes, that includes MSNBC, good god any rational person knows they are as biased in reporting as Fox is) love to spin this up as much as possible in hopes of condemning the entire Republican party. Wilson is a big boy and will suffer any consequences of his actions. But lets not blow this entire situation out of proportion to score political leverage. Reply

In the first place remember where the report is coming from. The President is still right in that the illegals aren't eligible. Just like with anything once you pass the level the law requires you would then become eligible. In the second place also remember that BOTH parties have worked to change the immigration laws for a pathway to being legal. The Latino vote is so big now that both parties want this. The same result would happen no matter which party was in office. Actually probably sooner if McCain had won if you go back and see who was his advisor on the immigration issue. Reply

I think we've had enough lies over the past eight years.... The best argument that we find that health reform would help illegal immigrants is that some might be able to purchase the public option — if it passes, and it might not — on the new health insurance exchange. They would purchase that at full cost. Obama said, "The reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally," which Wilson said was a "lie." Actually, Obama can make a pretty thorough case that reform doesn't apply to those here illegally. We don't find the public option argument enough to make the case that Obama "lied." We rate Wilson's statement False. Reply

There is nothing in the actual health care bill that provides for care for illegal immigrants. Wilson is utterly wrong in calling the president a liar. The fact that Obama can set a guideline to making illegal immigrants legal is an entirely different question at the time being and has to be debated. Shame on Newser for letting a title to the news résumé letting people think for one moment that Wilson could under some mind bending logic be right in calling the president a liar. Reply

It is true, that Section 243, under Article II of the July 2009 version of the Health Care Reform Bill (HR3300) states specifically that "nothing in this document provides for credits to undocumented aliens." Where the wiggle-room is left open is in the term "undocumented." Any case of documenting these illegal aliens will provide justification for allowing credits. And in less than a year the Census Bureau is heading out to do thier dececinnial duty of documenting each and every person in the country -- leagal or not. Reply
