Carter: Wilson's Heckling of Obama 'Based on Racism'

(AP) – Former President Jimmy Carter says Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst during President Obama's speech last week was an act "based on racism." Carter says Wilson's comment was part of an "inherent feeling" of some that a black man should not be president. In responding to a question at a town-hall meeting at his presidential center in Atlanta, Carter also called Wilson's comment "dastardly" and said the president should be treated with respect.

Jimmy Carter said just yesterday: "That racism inclination still exists, and I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of belief among many white people -- not just in the South but around the country -- that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply," This is what my previous remark was based upon, and I suppose this particular forum is more about Joe Wilson than anything else, but it just really frosts me when anyone suggest that the majority of the opposition is rooted in race. I find that to be very offensive.

Paul, "many" does not equal "majority". I am also sure many Republicans are racists; I know several. I'd guess 10-20% are quite fervent in their daily derision of non-whites. That means *millions* of Republicans are racists. It doesn't mean the Republican Party itself is racist, nor does it mean you are racist.

This was a matter of cause and effect. Obama lied about illegals getting free health care and Wilson's reacted by speaking out loud. Those who have studied the matter were saying the same thing at home. Wilson just was able to be heard. That is good because it caused a change to the plan to prevent illegals from receiving free care. So, both Dems and Reps have booed and made other noises since the first political meeting so what else new? Let's focus on tort reform, arrest of those who commit fraud with Medicaid and Medicare, with medical forms simplification, with changes that allows insurance plans to be universal and available to be used in any state ...plus a few more things. Wilson just got caught up in the moment - as did the rest of us who were watching and unable to be heard. He spoke for all of us. Color doesn't matter and the attempt to use it as an excuse / reason is ridiculous.

I may be naive, but I think that a majority of Republicans are actually race neutral. But the recent vitriol being hurled at Obama definitely seems to have racial overtones. If you see the signs being held at the 9/12 tea parties, there are several racially charged signs saying that he is trying to make slaves out of white people. Do people really believe this garbage?
