Ohio Con Wins Week Break After Botched Execution

Executioners struggled to find vein for 2 hours

Share

(Newser) – An Ohio death row inmate was given a week-long reprieve by the governor yesterday after the execution team couldn't find a usable vein in over 2 hours of trying at his planned execution, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Rowell Broom, convicted of raping and killing a teen girl in 1984, attempted to help the team by shifting positions, rubbing his arm, and pointing out possible veins before becoming visibly distressed.

Broom told the execution team to continue after being asked if he wanted a break. A prison official eventually contacted the governor to ask for a reprieve after the crew told him they didn't believe the 54-year-old's veins would hold the necessary saline solution. Officials aim to resolve the problem before Broom's next execution date, although experts believe the botched execution will lead to legal challenges that will delay his execution for much longer.

I think this is going to be challenged, whether under our standards of decency subjecting someone to multiple executions is cruel and unusual. - Richard Dieter, director of
the Death Penalty Information Center

aint they heard of an I/O...intraosseous needle...inserts quickly, and has better perfusion than a peripheral line, almost beats a large bore swanz-ganz catheter....works great on trauma victims, who are hypovolemic and have vascular collapse or compromise...just saying Reply

Tossing out medical terminology most didn't understand- why? Do YOU understand it? There was nothing in the article indicating this patient was hypovolemic, where did you get that? Vascular collapse? WTF? His veins constricted secondary to stress, not collapsed, due to loss of blood volume - you idiot. Mentioning a catheter buy name- who does that impress? If you made the same post without the chest thumping 'aint i sumthin' rhetoric, I wouldn't have ignored your desperately-seeking-approval ass. You don't know what you are talking about. Methinks you are a wanna-be ... just sayin'
