Ohio Con Wins Week Break After Botched Execution

Executioners struggled to find vein for 2 hours

(Newser) – An Ohio death row inmate was given a week-long reprieve by the governor yesterday after the execution team couldn't find a usable vein in over 2 hours of trying at his planned execution, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Rowell Broom, convicted of raping and killing a teen girl in 1984, attempted to help the team by shifting positions, rubbing his arm, and pointing out possible veins before becoming visibly distressed.

Broom told the execution team to continue after being asked if he wanted a break. A prison official eventually contacted the governor to ask for a reprieve after the crew told him they didn't believe the 54-year-old's veins would hold the necessary saline solution. Officials aim to resolve the problem before Broom's next execution date, although experts believe the botched execution will lead to legal challenges that will delay his execution for much longer.

I think this is going to be challenged, whether under our standards of decency subjecting someone to multiple executions is cruel and unusual. - Richard Dieter, director of

I think my POV would get a lot more thumbs down, not that anyone will read it since this is 3 weeks later anyway. I just don't think it right that we take pleasure in seeing another human being die or experience pain simply because they've done a bad thing. I understand that its very innate to us, and that its all tied back to this artificial construction called "fairness" that helps civil society function, but I'd hope that as thinking beings we could rise above those baser motivations. And although its a little better, I still don't think much of the justifaction that life in prison will be worse because they'll have to spend their life unhappy behind bars and death is a release and all that. We shouldn't choose punishment based on making the person feel bad, we should attempt to reform them, and if thats not possible, keep them behind bars SIMPLY to prevent them from harming more people.

I feel sorry fot the family of the victim for having to wait so long for the man who killed their loved one to be executed. and now they have to wait for another execution date and then have to go back to witness it again.

Am I the only one that laughed at this. I can picture it now. "Man fuck the vein is right there, can't you see it, man put the needle in god damn it. Damn man where did you get your license a cracker jack box. Give me the damn needle I'll do it myself."
