Investigators release sketches, jewelry in bid to ID victims

(NEWSER) - Long Island cops released new information yesterday as they continue to press their hunt for as many as three serial killers who they believe murdered at least eight women, a man in woman's clothing, and a toddler. Five of the victims remain unidentified, and police provided sketches of two of them in the hope that someone will know the victims, which may help lead police to the killer, reports Newsday . Investigators believe the unidentified toddler was the daughter of one of the murdered women, and displayed photos of earrings and bracelets worn by the little girl at a press conference. Philadelphia sergeant purposely shot himself in the shoulder

(NEWSER) - A white police sergeant in Philadelphia has admitted that he made up a story about being shot by a black assailant and instead purposely shot himself in the shoulder, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer . Cites drug dispute; 'my bro has a conscience'

(AP) - The brother of a Georgia man charged with slaying his father and seven others in a mobile home insists that 22-year-old Guy Heinze Jr would never harm his family, and instead speculates that a drug dispute could have prompted the killings. (AP) - Boxer Arturo Gatti's death was ruled a suicide by Brazilian police today, and a judge ordered the release of his wife, once suspected of killing the former champion. Investigator Paulo Alberes says authorities decided Gatti killed himself July 11 while at a seaside resort. (NEWSER) - Pittsburgh bade farewell today to the three police officers slain Saturday in a ceremony attended by family, citizens, and cops from around the nation, the Post-Gazette reports.
