Share

(Newser) – A government-backed rally in Tehran turned violent today, the BBC reports, after opposition supporters turned out to protest June’s disputed presidential election and clashed with security forces. A state news said opposition leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi was attacked and tear gas used during the event, intended to demonstrate support for Palestinians, and which brought thousands into the streets.

For the love of God, let's not do anything stupid that would let I'madinnerjacket play the patriotism/nationalism card - this thing might implode on its own if we keep our hands to ourselves. Reply

I've yet to hear our president ask for mercy for those young idealistic Iranians who search for peace and democracy. They were slaughtered. The demonstrators who were picked up after the election demonstrations have disappeared. There were 6 lawyers who tried to get many of them out of jail - and now all 6 lawyers are dead. Kids were thrown into one of 9 prisons and "given" to the general population to be raped and beaten. One family were told to come to the hospital to pick up their daughter - she had wounds to the womb and anus. When they arrived, she could not be found and later her body was found out in the desert - burned. If you saw somebody thrown into the trunk of a car, you had to turn and move away quickly. The news from Iran is covered by foreign papers. You can read the twitters at "twitter" central. Peace rallies in France can be watched on You Tube. What has our press reported? I don't know since I don't watch network news. Can anyone tell me what has been covered? We need to ask our Congress to plead for mercy for these children. Their plight has either been ignored or bartered for oil. I don't know. My nephew's wife is Iranian. Thank goodness most of her family is here and it is because her mom could see the dangers of the government in 1994 and was able to come to America. They are all now citizens of the United States and very proud of their new country. Reply
