Secret Service Probes Facebook Poll on Murdering Obama

Bloggers alerted law enforcement to potential danger

(Newser) – The Secret Service is looking into a Facebook poll that asked users to weigh in on whether the president should be killed. “We are taking the appropriate investigative steps,” said a rep for the agency. The poll, which has already been taken down, offered four possible answers to the question "should obama be killed?": “yes,” “no,” “maybe,” and, perhaps most tellingly, “If he cuts my health care,” Plum Line reports.

I disagree with folks saying this is about free speech when it comes to a sitting president. I believe someone who threatened Bush is still in jail. Look over this statute , which may apply: http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/usc_sec_18_00000871----000-.html -- the High Court might consider an electronic transmission the same as one via the mail.

maryz, I'm impressed that somebody around here went to the trouble to find the actual law, but it just doesn't apply. Yes, it's in very bad taste, but the law requires an actual threat. Soliciting the opinions of others is not a threat, especially when asked in an open forum. Had he said I think we should kill the president, then you'd be correct. There are dozens of cases like this. They all get investigated but few are ever charged since the vast majority are just idiots venting. I'll get a hundred thumbs down for this post, but if you follow the outcome of this case, you'll see it's the truth.

@young I acutally don't watch any cable news, but I do see the clips and read the transcripts of the shows on various websites. I think that people such as Sean hannity, micheal savage, glenn beck, keith olberman, racheal maddow, etc, are to pompous for their own good. they think that their opinion is gospel and i don't like that. I do see their various clips online though. Once a person attacks the country, which is what ayers did and gets off on a technicality, that doesn't give him a reprieve from his past actions. the fact that you will just overlook the fact that be blew up stuff in our country is amazing to me, but I am sure that you would lump McVeigh into the right wing conservative movement as a domestic terrorist, but now Ayers why? Okay I'm not reading through 114 comments, but here are my thoughts. First of all, I have nothing against Obama. I like the guy, I'm pretty supportive of a lot of his views, but not everything of course. All in all just a good President so far. But who gives a shit if someone's asking for people's opinions on whether Barack Obama should be assassinated? Really, what does it matter? If people really do believe that he is as bad as, or worse than, Hitler or Stalin, then they SHOULD be asking that question. Think about it, if you were living in Nazi Germany with the 20/20 understanding of what was going on then wouldn't you be at LEAST asking such questions yourself? Wouldn't you at least be getting the word out? These people are batshit fucking crazy to think Obama's an evil villain, but it's their goddamn right to THINK it and we should all be willing to die for our right to speak our minds. So, come back to me when people start planning to assassinate Obama and THEN you'll have my agreement that these people should be imprisoned. But until then, they're exercising their Constitutional right to free speech that none of us in the past few generations have ever actually had to die fighting for. Reply
