In Blog Post, White House Blasts Fox News

Prez promised to call out detractors, and that he did over Olympics claims

(Newser) – In an unprecedented move, the White House has excoriated one of its most vocal opponents in a blog post ripping Fox News. The post singles out Glenn Beck, saying his "program has shown that nothing is worthy of respect if it can be used as part of a partisan attack to boost ratings" and proceeds to refute arguments the lachrymose talking head has made using the labels "RHETORIC" and "REALITY."

Headlined "Reality Check: Trying to Turn a Point of Pride into a Moment of Shame," the entry starts by refuting Beck’s claim that Vancouver lost $1 billion "when they had the Olympics"—kind of a gimme, considering the city won't host the Games until next year—and goes on to debunk a number of other Beck arguments. And don't look for this to be the end of the standoff, Time suggests: "Since both the White House and Fox are largely trying to rally different audiences, they can both benefit by keeping this fight going."

A FREE PRESS???? Being "free" does not entail a wholesale dissemination of lies in an effort to subvert the work of our own government. How perverse that Faux news has tricked American citizens to hope for Obamas (and thus our own) failure. However, the press is clearly not "free", as big media is obviously tied to both parties to the extent that these corporations support or castigate politicians often based solely on party affiliation (AKA corporate affiliation).

Knowing that a snake was in the grass, you'd kill it before allowing your children to play there. The decision to push back at Beck is that easy. This isn't a free speech issue, its a fairness issue -- and if Beck is going to go on the air with unfair, biased and untrue stories about our government, I think the White House is perfectly justified in calling him on it. Which begs the question: why didn't the people who are in the business of reporting the news do this themselves? Is it because they love a fight? Answer: yes, it is; reporting on a fight is much more entertaining than a story that would end the fight before it began.

^^^ With the BIG picture in mind, you are right, none of that is terribly important. I am not a huge Obama fan; there are much more serious things to be concerned about, concerning the white house. Beck takes attention off the real issues (the economy, climate change, the middle east, etc) and places it on issues that might occupy one's mind, yet get us nowhere as a society.

Factcheck is an Annenburg group - read George Soros's fingers in that pie. Neither is non-partisan. Go to NewsBusters which uses You Tube videos so you can watch what they report and make up your own mind. I do and Obama is not the most truthful person in the world. I think he might believe what he is saying when he is saying it. The French and the Indians think that - as does some Brits. That is why they call him President Pantywaist. Yes, you see the right taking things out of context and "exposing" that which no sane person would really believe is an exposé. Would you like a list of Fox's lies? We can start with Glenn Beck's claim about Jones, which Politifact.com rated as "Barely True" (in other words, taken completely out of context). We can then move on to Beck's comment about John Holdren, which was given Politifact's "Pants on Fire" rating. We can discuss Beck's lies about "Cash for Clunkers", which were cited by Factcheck.org, which also addressed his ridiculous claim about the number of "czars", pointing out that Bush had more. And look! We haven't even gotten to Hannity and O'Reilly yet!

True journalism comes from wire tap, security and cell phone footage I almost forgot the peep hole cameras. Add to that searching through individual credit card accounts and you could win a Pulitzer. America is way too voyeuristic with the news. Beck is the Howard Stern of current events. He is simply telling America that the breeze that they feel on their butt cheeks is because their fiscal pants are down and their shame is exposed. The insurance Industry is blackmailing the legislative branch of our government with the threat of raising premiums on America if a public option is put in place. In the old days people used to say that Insurance was a racket. Someone gave them immunity from the trust busting laws that would have prevented their monopoly and choke hold on the health care industry. They by their behavior are saying..."America must do what we say or be priced out of existance." If the Justice Department does not get busy and find out who is manipulating our Congressmen we will have a Communist Olgarky headed by the KGB of America headed by the Insurance Executives. Otherwise they will milk America dry and then ask for a bailout when the Swine Flu wipes out a large segment of their subscribers. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. It is time for Congress and The Justice Department to strike back for the American People. Repeal their protections as the insurance industry is not acting in the best interest of the American People regarding healthcare. Reply
