Gay Activists Gaga for the Lady

The outlandish pop singer brings her charisma to Washington

Share

(Newser) – It became official this weekend in Washington: Lady Gaga is the new icon for the gay community, this generation’s Cher. She brought the crowds to their feet—twice—at the Human Rights Campaign dinner, where even President Obama said, “It is a privilege to be here tonight to open for Lady Gaga”—and she doesn’t intend to back down anytime soon.

“I will never turn my back on my friends,” says Gaga, who drew cheers at yesterday's National Equality March, and called out Obama, promising to “continue to push your administration to bring your promise to reality.” In return, Gaga's “friends” are showering the 23-year-old bisexual singer with praise, like the attendee who says, “It's almost like Martin Luther King and the civil rights speeches. We have a voice.”

I'm in the GLBT community and could care less about the no talented hack. Not *all* of us listen to that pop shit. Some of us listen to real music... AC/DC, Def Leppard, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, ZZTop, etc... Reply

What are you talking about??? "No talented hack?" Lady Gaga writes and performs all her own music (so different than most performer/singers today) and she is smart as a whip. Classic rock is great, but LG is a top notch act today.

It's nice to know there's still people out there who are so uppity about their music tastes that they decry forms of music they don't like as "not real." While there are certainly many thematic differences, it doesn't sound too different from those that claimed gay marriage isn't "real" marriage. Sure it's music, but what does making claims like that say about your dichotomous viewpoint, if things had been different, and you were the oppressor? Just a thought..
