Police ID Amnesiac Teen Found in NYC

'Jane Doe' is 18-year-old from Washington state

(Newser) – A teenager who turned up outside a New York City shelter earlier this month saying she didn't know her name has been identified, police say. "Jane Doe" is 18-year-old Kacie Aleece Peterson from eastern Washington state, and her father is en route to New York to pick her up, CNN reports. This isn't the first time Peterson has disappeared and later said she suffered memory loss, relatives in Washington tell KOMO radio in Seattle.

She may have Dissociative Personality Disorder--used to be called Multiple Personality Disorder and is quite controversial. It can, it is said, be caused by early trauma or abuse. People usually don't get amnesia twice. But alcoholic blackouts and dissociative fuege can recurr.

The parts of your brain which deal with what is commonly referred to as IQ need not be weak in the case of amnesia sufferers. For someone to have a total wipe - (both short AND long term memories) is incredibly rare though.
