Iran Wants to Change Uranium Deal

But Tehran proposal would make the agreement pointless

(Newser) – Iran continues to waffle on the details of the deal under consideration to ship its enriched uranium to Russia. Now it's saying that if it does agree to the deal—a formal response is due Friday—it won't send all of its uranium at once. Instead, it will send shipments to Russia in installments, a condition that would make the agreement largely pointless.

"One of the problems would be that a part of the stockpile would remain in Iran, so the risk of breakout capacity would still be there," one researcher tells the New York Times. Other analysts suggest that Tehran's latest declaration may simply be a trial balloon to see how the West reacts.

(NEWSER) - Chanting "death to America" and "death to Israel," thousands gathered in Iran today to mourn slain nuclear scientist Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan , hauling his coffin through Tehran. Meanwhile, an independent news site suggested Iran is preparing a covert counteroffensive against the West in retaliation for the bomb blast. It quoted a security official as saying the plan could involve foreign assassinations: "Iran's response will be extra-territorial and extra-regional ... none of those who ordered or carried out (the attacks) should feel secure in any part of the world." (NEWSER) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez shared a laugh about a nuclear bomb and Washington during a jovial meeting yesterday in Caracas. Chavez joked that a nuke was ready under a grassy knoll in front of his Miraflores palace steps. "That hill will open up and a big atomic bomb will come out," he said as the two laughed. "The imperialist spokesmen say Ahmadinejad and I are going into the Miraflores basement now to set our sights on Washington and launch cannons and missiles," Chavez added. "It's laughable." More»

Confirmed: Iran Enriching Uranium Underground

Higher level of enrichment at Fordo prompts international concern

(NEWSER) - Iran's claim has been confirmed: The country has indeed begun enriching uranium at an underground bunker, two diplomats tell the AP today. They call the news particularly worrying because the Fordo site is being used to make material that can be upgraded more quickly and easily for use in a nuclear weapon than the nation's main enriched stockpile. The anonymous diplomats, whose info comes from an inspection of Fordo last week by the International Atomic Energy Agency, say that centrifuges at the Fordo facility are churning out uranium enriched to 20%, compared to the 3.5% being made at Iran's main enrichment plant.
