Lieberman Threatens Filibuster Over Public Option

Independent's warning is bad news for Harry Reid

(Newser) – Joe Lieberman doesn't want a public option, and he warned today that he would join a Republican filibuster to try to prevent one from becoming law. The statement by the Democrat-turned-independent is bad news for Harry Reid's prospects of getting 60 votes in the Senate. Lieberman said he told Reid "that if the bill remains what it is now, I will not be able to support a cloture motion before final passage. Therefore I will try to stop the passage of the bill."

His main beef is with the public option, reports Talking Points Memo. "I think a lot of people may think that the public option is free. It's not. It's going to cost the taxpayers and people who have health insurance now, and if it doesn't it's going to add terribly to the national debt." He said he likes much of the legislation but objects to the addition of a "Washington-based entitlement program."

Actually, logothete, he got 33% of the Democratic vote, not "maybe 10%". A full third of Dems voted against their own party nominee, he got a majority of the independent vote, and a big chunk of Republicans who might have taken advantage of a split liberal vote, also voted for him. Sounds like pretty broad support, actually.

Hi Fondue. I just finished watching the video that you recommended. In Canada the govt. doesn't interfere what happens between me and my doctor. He doesn't even like prescribing anything unless it's absolutely necessary. I went to physiotherapy for 3 yrs. My doctor didn't know since that service doesn't fall into our health plan. When I told him he said if that if you go to physiotherapy & you aren't better in 3 months, don't go back. The burn victim in that video was lucky to have a caring wife. What a fiasco!

When it come to socialized med or socialism for that matter you have to look at it in context of time. Nial ferguson had a great take on this, i encourage you to check it out fondue. I shows the how perfect the system works at first but then after time the flaw show and the more the gov plugs them more and more show. Japan and argentina were prime exsamples of this, Canada while you may think is great has serious flaws that are starting to show. Socialism is the thought of utopia with the iidea of oneness, Wish it worked but human nature of wanting disproves it. THat being said we should take care of those who don't have the basics but it should not be the gov or an entity of the gov, perhaps foundations set up for pre tax donations direct from your tax refund htan can be deducted to the next years return would be an option. Just trying to think out side the box that is gov "controled". Tax money should not go for charity but for basic services such as defence roads education power grids. Let's get one thing clear that seems to be missing in the debate over a public option. We all pay for our healthcare one way or another, whether directly, through private insurance middle men, or government run programs like Medicare and Medicaid. Lieberman's statement that it will add to the national debt is NOT the issue because if the government takes on a portion of health care then of course it adds costs to government (because HEALTHCARE IS NOT FREE). The issue is whether the costs + positive benefits of government run care outweigh the costs + positive benefits of private run insurance. I tend to believe that universal insurance is a public good, with positive externalities and thus calls out for non-for-profit, public options. But I accept that reasonable people can disagree on this point. But, I repeat, the argument that public options add to debt is a non-starter. Well then I think we shouldn't have government involved in national defense since it overwhelmingly contributes to the national budget and debt. Reply

He's actually thinking ahead and he makes a good point about the money. You can try and sensationalize this whole business, but we need to think about the consequences. Health care changes won't actually kick in for another 3 years anyway, so anyone who is going to die is still going to 2 years from now, whether or not the public option is on the table. People say they want the public option, but its very idea has changed hands and form so many times it isn't exactly the end of all problems voters think it is. How it is to be funded still has yet to be fully dissected to the public (the CBO was given nebulous ideas as to where the money will come from, not down-to-earth connections and participatory agreements). We need transparency and more information. If it is as good as it sounds and they can prove it won't ruin our economic future, then let's pass it, but until I know what I'm voting for, I'm not voting for anything. Reply

It occurs to me that Mr. Obama is playing chess while Mr. Lieberman is playing checkers. I am rather pleased by the thought that Mr. Lieberman will filibuster health care reform over the public insurance option. That, along with the GOP's resistance to any change in the status quo, could be a fat, easy pitch to a strong batter.
