'This Is It' wears crown as 'Paranormal Activity' heads for $100M

(Newser) – This Is It lived up to its name at the weekend box office, raking in $21.3 million domestically and $101 million internationally. The Michael Jackson documentary's strong showing prompted distributor Sony to extend its original 2-week run by 3 weeks, through Thanksgiving weekend, reports Variety. The sleeper sensation Paranormal Activity racked up $16.5 million and is headed for a total haul of $100 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The top five:

  1. This Is It, $21.3 million
  2. Paranormal Activity, $16.5 million
  3. Law Abiding Citizen, $7.3 million
  4. Couples Retreat, $6.1 million
  5. Saw VI, $5.6 million

I wasn't impressed by Paranormal Activity. It's shot with a camcorder. Most of the spooky is from the jerky angles; you're on tenterhooks expecting to see something every time they move the camera for the first half- but you don't. The last half you're like, 'just get to it already.' Reply

Thanks for spilling the beans on the movie, Paranormal Activity, I was going tonight to see it but now am not dude, you could at least let the people who wanted to see the movie, see it and discover the movie for them self!

For such a small budget, I was impressed. There have been plenty of horror movies that totally sucked and cost millions to make. And besides, I got to see it for free so no buyer's remorse.

After the three week run of "This Is It," are we finished with all the Michael Jackson hype. Given, he was a good entertainer, but come on folks, he's been turned into a god! Let's move on. We've got some serious people out there like Sarah Palin whom we can turn into something: Definitely not a goddess, but more like a pumpkin! Reply
