Sorry, Dems, 2008 Is So Last Year

Winning coalition doesn't reemerge in gubernatorial races

Share

(Newser) – Last night’s gubernatorial defeats proved to Democrats that whatever magic they harnessed last November has left the building. Off-year elections aren’t usually great predictors, but with the Democrats’ winning 2008 coalition essentially absent, the warning signs are clear, writes Dan Balz in the Washington Post. Most notably, Democrats lost the independents, who broke decisively for Republicans last night after being solidly Democratic last year.

Absent, too, were President Obama’s legions of young voters. In Virginia, just 10% of voters were under 30, down from about 20% last year, while in both states the number of 65+ voters jumped. Black voters, also key to Obama’s Virginia win, showed up in smaller numbers. And the Republicans carried groups that had swung Democrats' way last year, including suburbanites, non-college graduates, and those “very worried” about the economy.

It's typical to provoke a bump in enthusiasm and turnout by the opposition following a major political reversal, so it's a mistake to read this as the beginning of another political trend. On the other hand, Dems DO should worry about turning out their base in upcoming elections, so they better get work on delivering on some of their campaign promises. Reply

Man, I sure hope young people realise what they're doing by not getting out and voting. Leaving the country open to being run by people like BushChenyRumsfeld and people who don't give a damn for your worldwide reputation; People who would drill, dam, deforest, top mountains, etc for today's profit and be damned with the future; People who say "I'll be dead when the chickens come home to roost", is NOT what young Americans should be doing!! Wake up Young Americans. Start leading your country back to its position of prominence in the world!

Funny how people thumbed down your comment but didn't have the decency to post why. We can only hope that the elections yesterday are the start of a major trend to tell Obama/Pelosi/Reid/Dodd/Frank, etc., where they can stick their socialist agenda.
