Sorry, Dems, 2008 Is So Last Year

Winning coalition doesn't reemerge in gubernatorial races

(Newser) – Last night’s gubernatorial defeats proved to Democrats that whatever magic they harnessed last November has left the building. Off-year elections aren’t usually great predictors, but with the Democrats’ winning 2008 coalition essentially absent, the warning signs are clear, writes Dan Balz in the Washington Post. Most notably, Democrats lost the independents, who broke decisively for Republicans last night after being solidly Democratic last year.

Absent, too, were President Obama’s legions of young voters. In Virginia, just 10% of voters were under 30, down from about 20% last year, while in both states the number of 65+ voters jumped. Black voters, also key to Obama’s Virginia win, showed up in smaller numbers. And the Republicans carried groups that had swung Democrats' way last year, including suburbanites, non-college graduates, and those “very worried” about the economy.

You apparently don't understand the diference between local and state control, and federal assistance vs. federal control. Most of those services are in terrible shape for a reason.

@polytricks: I wholeheartedly agree with you on your comment. @tomodachi: I agree with your comment as well. What ever happeneed to the part of conservatism that means to conserve? Bush's spending was astronomical during his presidency. The scope of the government increased wildly as well. Yet, what stances did he campaign under? The exact opposite of course. Dr. Paul is known here in Houston as Dr. No for a reason. He actually does vote as he says he will each and every time. And he is also known as "The Taxpayer's Best Friend" for similarly good reasons. He embodies the true "conservative" if such a term should ever be applicable. For instance, just watch his Fox news debate with the other Republican presidential hopefuls or the episode of Bill Maher in which Maher declares Dr. Paul, "my new hero." @jamerican: What you described is best embodied by the Libertarian or Constitution parties. Certainly the Republicans have proven time and time again that this is not where their actions stand. And it never will be either.

The voters who chose the winning candidates in Va. & N.J. own the outcome as well as the candidates. Are both governors capable of curing the economic woes in 9 months? Apply the same standards to them as they did to The President.
