'Sarah's Not Retreating, She's Reloading'

Going Rogue shows Palin as smart feminist with eye on presidency

(Newser) – The Sarah Palin who emerges on the pages of Going Rogue is a far cry from the "prejudiced, dim-witted ideologue of the popular liberal imagination," Melanie Kirkpatrick writes in the Wall Street Journal. Kirkpatrick finds a "nuanced" politician "capable of mastering complicated issues," and a "new style of feminist" who writes with "sensitivity and affection" about issues like homosexuality and abortion.

The book offers plenty of juicy tidbits about the McCain campaign's botched handling of Palin, though Kirkpatrick thinks she goes "too gentle" on McCain staffers and especially on the candidate himself. Looking for cues about Palin's presidential ambitions, Kirkpatrick wishes the book offered more meat on her policy positions—ultimately, Going Rogue is "more a personal memoir than a political one."

Mrs. Palin emerges as a new style of feminist: a politician who took on the Ole Boy network and won; a wife with a supportive husband whose career takes second place to hers; and a mother who isn't shy about showcasing her family responsibilities. - Melanie Kirkpatrick

Sarah Palin: proof positive that a certain percent of the US population is too ignorant for their own good. I saw online video of her gubernatorial election debates... she talked professionally and intelligently... just like you'd expect a professional politician to talk. So now it's all: gosh, golly, and you betcha? So what happened to her between then and 2008? Did she get hit in the head with a flying Salmon? Fact is, she's pandering to the folksy gullible. And she's become a millionaire from it... just from this book alone. She's little more than a WWF Wrestler. Here for the show... here for the dough.
