Carbon-Tax Foes Must Think the End Is Nigh

How else to explain them being OK with the exploding population?

(Newser) – Opponents of cap-and-trade legislation must believe that a massive plague will wipe out 2.5 billion people sometime between now and 2050. Otherwise, their stance makes no sense, writes Thomas Friedman of the New York Times. Even if you don’t believe climate change is real—and Friedman does—you can’t deny that the world is getting more crowded. According to a 2006 UN report, the population will rise 2.5 billion by 2050.

“The energy, climate, water, and pollution implications of adding another 2.5 billion mouths to feed will be staggering,” says Friedman. At the same time, the world’s getting flatter, with more developing nations aspiring to America’s lifestyle. If they all drive oil-burning cars—instead of clean, American-invented alternatives—that’ll enrich petro-dictators in Iran, Venezuela, and Russia. So either deniers don’t care, or believe “a global pandemic or mass outbreak of abstinence will freeze the world population—forever.”

Not only are we adding 2.5 billion people by 2050, but many more will live like 'Americans' — with American-size homes, American-size cars, eating American-size Big Macs. - Thomas Friedman

Green hawks believe that the country that invents the most energy technology will enjoy the most economic security, energy security, national security, and global respect. And we believe that country must be America. - Thomas Friedman

Yes, DanBaja, I believe we should do something, as in research, development and implementation of better technology and infrastructure. This is a new problem, so the details are still being worked out. As a result, I do not assume one way is the only right way, but we need to support efforts to figure out something. Is that so unreasonable, or are you of the opinion that there is a vast conspiracy?

Phiom, we actually agree. A conspiracy? I doubt it. More likely a monopolistic cartel, fed by governments who true dont know any better. We (assuming your not a globally powerfull CEO of a major multinational corporation) are powerless by comparison to those with a lot of pull. We can do our part to lead an examined life and ensure that our contributions are as meaningfull as possible, but jumping on every feel good bandwagon will do little but make us feal good till we are over run with frustration, or we find the next bandwagon. After working for the Govt for my entire adult life, I really believe that overall they are just nitwits who dont have any better ideas than the average homeless person. But they are in charge, and truely get drunk on power easier than you would think; one thing leads to another, and next thing you know they are pushing some great fix that will work if you give them enough money. Rather than look at them for leadership, we need to look at them like children who need to be trained.
