Beverly Hills, LA Ban Cat Declawing

Calif. cities move to protect kitty claws while they still can

(Newser) – Furniture beware: Los Angeles and Beverly Hills have become the latest California cities to outlaw the declawing of cats. Santa Monica and San Francisco recently passed similar bans and others are considering banning declawing before next year, when a new state law on the regulation of veterinary medicine will effectively ban cities from banning declawing.

"The obvious truth is that declawing does nothing good for cats," an LA councilman told ABC7. "It is not clipping nails. It is actually amputation, sometimes leaving cats crippled and in pain for the rest of the lives." State veterinary groups oppose declawing bans, arguing that they will lead to more abandoned animals.

Declawing a cat is now a misdemanor in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.

lets hope more cities follow suit! Its mean to declaw them, if it bugs people so much just clip them just be careful not to cut to much of the nail or they can bleed and really hurt them.

@passin - i agree also about the docking of tails and cropping of ears. if the animal was born that way then let 'em alone. it is illegal in england to to do do this and also many other countries in europe. i wish the akc would get behind would stop penalizing uncropped and undocked dogs then maybe the inhumane procedures would stop.

im not for the torture of any animal, whether it be claw removal, cropped ears/tail etc. its kinda twisted that we hav e to mutilate our pets to special specifications instead of just loving him for how they are.
