25 Killed in Russian Train Crash

Officials suspect terrorist attack

(Newser) – Russian authorities suspect terrorism is behind a train derailment that killed at least 22 people last night. Dozens of others were injured when the Moscow-St Petersburg train came off the tracks, the Guardian reports. A crater was found beside the tracks, leading officials to believe a bomb could have been the cause.

"A one metre-diameter hole has been found next to the railway track," one emergency official told Russian media. "Witnesses heard a loud slap before the accident. All of this could point to a possible act of terrorism." The Moscow-St. Petersburg train line, Russia's busiest, has been targeted by terrorists before, most recently in 2007. A former military officer suspected of masterminding that attack is still at large.

Anyone who makes a joke about the loss of human life deserves to be thumbed down.
