(Newser) – The Stupak amendment does nothing but maintain “current law” that prohibits federal financing of abortion, says someone who should know: Michigan Rep. Bart Stupak. The co-author of the House amendment complains of "misinformation" characterizing it as a draconian anti-abortion measure. “The amendment specifically states that even those who receive federal subsidies can purchase a supplemental policy with private money."

“Some opponents of the amendment have tried to argue that it would effectively end health insurance coverage of abortion in both the private and public sectors,” Stupak writes in the New York Times. “This argument is nothing more than a scare tactic.” The amendment is "consistent with Hyde Amendment, which in the 33 years since its passage has done nothing to inhibit private health insurers from offering abortion coverage."
