(Newser) – Dresses for last night's Emmy Awards tended toward retro, pastel, and strapless—a smart move in the steamy LA weather. Katherine Heigl, Kate Walsh, and Jennifer Morrison were in the retro crowd, and Heigl also hopped on another of the night's bandwagons: bright red lips. “Red is a really hot color for fall,” her makeup artist told "Access Hollywood."

Eva Longoria's low-backed sparkly cocktail dress was by Kaufman Franco, who designed her wedding dress. Walsh caught the eye of Washington Post fashion editor Robin Givhan, who listed her coif as one of "several major hair malfunctions," and Heather of the Go Fug Yourself blog pondered whether "several relatives of Big Bird had to die" for Vanessa Williams' feathery skirt.
