US Clears Toyota Fix for Gas Pedals

Dealers should get replacement parts by end of next week

(AP) – Toyota has received clearance from federal regulators on a fix for the company's sticky gas pedals, say three people briefed on the matter. Two dealers said Toyota plans to make the announcement Monday morning. Dealers could get parts as early as Thursday or Friday.

A Department of Transportation official confirmed that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not object to Toyota's repair plans. Technically NHTSA's approval is not required, but Toyota would be reluctant to proceed if the government raised objections. Toyota has recalled millions of vehicles worldwide because the gas pedal systems can stick.

IMHO the cure sounds like a kludge: "Several dealers have said the fix involves slipping a shim into an area where springs push the gas pedal back to its resting position after a driver has eased off the gas" (AP) Not known is if it also involves the application of silly putty or duck tape.
