France Denies Citizenship Over Full Islamic Veil

(User Submitted) – The French government has denied citizenship to a foreign national on the grounds that he forces his wife, a French citizen, to wear the full Islamic veil. The man, whose current nationality was not disclosed, needed citizenship to settle in the country. The French immigration minister said the man's request for citizenship was being refused because he was "compelling his wife to wear the all-covering veil, depriving her of the freedom to come and go with her face uncovered, and rejected the principles of secularism and equality between men and women."

A parliamentary committee last week proposed a partial ban on full veils, reports the BBC. It also recommended refusing citizenship to anyone showing visible signs of "radical religious practice."

Radical religious practice is such a vague phrase. I feel like this could be taken advantage of. The french pride themselves on maintaining personal freedom, but then they keep trying to curb them.

Haha, again with the name-calling. It's the only defense you have, Count, and if that's all you got in support of this decision, then I rest my case. MY argument used nothing but logic.

I insist that my wife and daughters wear SpongeBob Squarepants outfits to work to preserve their modesty. It completely hides their identities and faces but we decided that's best for my precarious male ego, and they're both too cowed & stupid to resist. Thankfully your weak argument preserves their right work in your office and and stand around all day unidentifiable. Enjoy!
