Luxury Vacation of Future: Aircruises

Inventive company unveils design for a 21st-century airship

(Newser) – Cruise passengers of the near future could be floating above the Earth in colossal kite-shaped craft if design firm Seymourpowell's plans take off from the drawing board. The firm, whose work was sponsored by Samsung, says its Aircruise concept could someday be a leisurely, environmentally friendly alternative to flying for the luxury traveler, CNN reports.

"I can't think of another way you can experience pure luxury travel," said the firm's head of transportation. "Imagine sitting in your stateroom and seeing the Serengeti below you or floating above the tallest skyscraper in the world." The firm's designers have created a detailed and achievable plan for the solar and hydrogen cell-powered craft, although they say it's currently only a feasibility study and it would take astronomical amounts of money to actually build one.

The Aircruise is a giant, vertical airship powered by natural energy and designed to carry travelers in style and luxury, its designers say.

Fly in a little fou- seater airplane. My sister is a private pilot. I've been all over in that tiny plane of hers, but the last 3 flights were riddled with minor problems which were enough for me to believe that mankind belongs on the ground. This is a plane that is professionally maintained, like a Dusenburg. But be up in the air at night and have your radio go out or loss of panel readings, or electrical power. Yikes. Now apply that to a cruise liner full of helpless people. 3 emergency landings hasn't made me fear traveling by air, but it sure jades my view of an air cruiser... floating. That beast in the video is a great concept, truly creative, even visionary, simply highly unlikely. And by the way, you can fly a jet at slower speeds. Ever seen one of those jets come in, fly low and drop fire retardant over a fire. Jets fly high and fast so as to save time and fuel. But dream on... Arther Clarke came up with the satellite concept.
