(Newser) – The recession took a bite out of charitable giving last year, but some very wealthy, very generous people kept their checkbooks open. Slate delivers its annual list of the 60 biggest donors in the country, who together came up with $4.2 billion in new commitments to charity last year. The top four:

  1. Stanley and Fiona Druckenmiller: Gave $705 million to their foundation, which supports medical research and poverty-fighting causes.
  2. John Templeton: Put another $573 million to his foundation, which supports research into the relationships between science and religion, and to promote free enterprise.
  3. Bill and Melinda Gates: Gave $350 million to help their foundation construct a new headquarters. They declined to say how much of the $3.3 billion they pledged in 2004 was disbursed in 2009.
  4. Michael Bloomberg: The New York mayor donated $254 million to 1,358 nonprofits.
Other big names: George Soros (No. 6, $150 million), Oprah Winfrey (No. 25, $41.4 million), and Ted Turner (No. 57, $13.2 million).

Bill and Melinda Gates came in at #3 on Slate's list.

Jon, I generally try to be more PC than this, but that comment is bullshit, and you are an idiot for saying it. Tell you what: how about you just use windows 1.0 and let us know how that goes for you. The rest of us are happy that we are on our 5th or 6th copy of windows, and we are happy that Gates is taking from people who can afford computers and giving to those who can't afford food.

And who will you NEVER see on such a list? Steve Jobs. He wouldn't even pee on a newborn baby if it were on fire. He only donates money to Standford to get buildings named after himself. A miserable excuse for a human being. I look forward to reading the real story about how he 'miraculously' got that new liver - but that won't be for several decades.

@Jonmark, right on. Gates has suffocated progress in tech infrastructure, development advancement. Belongs in jail. @oneworld: you are an idiot that has no clue.
