Brakes Force Prius Recall in Japan

Toyota's action affects new model, two other hybrids

(AP) – Toyota says it is recalling the new Prius in Japan for braking problems. Toyota says it will inform the Transport Ministry later Tuesday it is recalling the gas-electric hybrid that went on sale last year. The recall will include two other hybrid models—the Lexus HS250h sedan and the Sai, which is sold only in Japan.

Agreed for the most part, about the engineering. Other than that, i'm not sure what the rest of that was about...

Personally, If you want fine engineering--stick with the Germans. All those years of people buying Japanese was just a price quota--from the Marshall plan--got to remember that we bombed Japan to the stone age and then went and built it back up. That's the kind of folks we were back then. Now, we pulverize Iraq and all the money goes to American companies--there would have never been a Toyota if we hadn't built it after '45. But, according to the plan and Mac Arthur who ran it we didn't own Toyota--just built it. What--no history anywhere? like none of this matters at all? You just don't care, or you think I''m crazy---I'll except either one, but you got to understand that I know my son with the doctorate in physics and he couldn't name the first white English/American baby born in this country on a dare.

They are fine--the Prius uses its brake for energy--how cool is that? But, they didn't get the new one right, but all the old ones are fine--you did get that, right--that every time you stepped on the brake it made a charge? Not much--but enough to go back to the battery, If you didn't get that--then we all need to go back to school!!!

(AP) - Toyota recalled 106,000 first-generation Prius hybrid cars globally today for faulty steering caused by a nut that may come loose. Loose nuts in the electric-power steering can cause the vehicle, if operated over a long time, to steer with too much force. Only one minor accident, reported in the US, has been suspected of being related to the problem. There were, however, 21 complaints that may have been caused by the loose nuts, the automaker said. The issue can be fixed by putting in better nuts and will take about four hours. More»

Braking issues force recall of nearly 500K hybrids

(NEWSER) - Toyota president Akio Toyoda apologized to customers as he confirmed the widely expected worldwide recall of 437,000 Prius and other hybrid vehicles today. Toyota Slapped With Max Fine Over Recalls

Company to pay $32.4M in addition to $16.4M already paid

(NEWSER) - Toyota has agreed to pay $32.4 million in fines for dragging its feet in recalling millions of defective vehicles, the maximum fine allowable by law. Together with the $16.4 million paid earlier this year, the fines amount to roughly $30 for every car the company sold in the US this year, the New York Times reports. The fines cover both recalls over faulty accelerators and fragile steering relay rods. More»

'Consumer Reports' warned of porential problems with 2010 GX460

(NEWSER) - In the wake of a Consumer Reports warning, Toyota is recalling the 2010 Lexus GX 460. The automaker had already suspended sales of the SUV, which the magazine rated "don't buy" because of concerns the vehicle was prone to tipping over. Feds: NY Prius Crash Driver Never Stepped on Brake

Local officials say data are inconclusive

(NEWSER) - Computer data from a Toyota Prius that crashed in New York shows that at the time of the accident the driver was not applying the brakes, safety officials say. But local police say the evidence is inconclusive and driver error has not been established. "For any agency to release data and to draw conclusions without consulting with the law enforcement agency that brought this to light could be self-serving," a local police rep says. More»
