Scottie Favored to Take Westminster Best in Show

Whippet, bulldog, puli and poodle headed for finals tonight

(Newser) – The card for tonight’s Best in Show competition at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show isn’t even filled yet, but speculation is rampant. Sadie the Scottish terrier will compete against others from her group today, and is favored to win. Should that happen, her breed is an 8-to-1 Las Vegas favorite to take the whole show. “As Tom Hanks is a great movie star, Sadie is special,” a breeder tells Bloomberg.

Not so fast! With 3 of the 7 group representatives yet to be decided, the 4 dogs who are assured a spot bear mentioning. They are a fan-favorite whippet, Chanel; Conrad the dreadlocked puli, who had won the herding group before; a French bulldog, Bru, the first of her breed to win the nonsporting group; and Walker, a toy poodle. Some 2,500 dogs were entered in the New York show, and yesterday’s holiday brought big crowds to Madison Square Garden. “It’s a madhouse,” an owner told the AP.
