The positioning didn't change yesterday in the three-team race for the wild card in the National League. But now a fourth team needs to be added to the mix. With the Padres, Phillies and Rockies all winning, San Diego remained one game ahead of the other squads. But the Mets' loss left them with the same record as the Padres, only a game up in both the NL East and the wild card.
The Mets' drop back to the pack only increases the number of scenarios in which at least two of the four teams could make the playoffs. It also raises the possibility that three teams could find their seasons extended via elimination games to determine who gets the wild card bid. One other consideration: the record of NL West leader Arizona is only one win better than the Padres and Mets with four to play.
