(AP) – New York City has agreed to pay up to $657 million to settle more than 10,000 lawsuits filed by ground zero rescue and response workers who say they were sickened by World Trade Center dust. The settlement was announced tonight by the WTC Captive Insurance Company, a special entity established to indemnify the city and its contractors against potential legal action as they moved to clean up the site.

Ah, thanks for the correction Dill, my calculation was off by an order of magnitude. I stand by my opinion that everyone has their hand out wanting settlements for doing their job. If you think your job might be dangerous, go be a librarian! These lawyers are going to make the cost of doing business in this country prohibitive. Look at all the outsourcing - soon Americans will be grateful to accept any job they can get and not complain about the inherent risks associated with getting out of bed and making a living.

657 million divided by approximately 10,000 doesn't seem to be that much money, especially when talking about medical expenses.

It's about time they came up with money for those workers. Now, what are they going to do for all the people who LIVE downtown, and were also told they had nothing to worry about?
